There is also a perception that the Air Force and the Navy offer less risk than the Army or Marine Corp. Having grown up as a Navy Brat, I’d say the risks were different, but about equal. Death and dismemberment are as apt to hit far behind the Frontline, especially with both sides having missiles to throw at each other.
Considering he was trying to avoid registering for the draft, it’s ironic he’s planning to volunteer just a few years later.
There are a lot of people who object to the idea of the draft, but are perfectly willing to join up voluntarily.
