Yes. Hand na-B’Lili was in a medical center intensive care unit as a baby when Habit Aesop broke up. The rest of their family was lost.

The “na-” prefix in High Born tradition means that the child’s life is given over. One, like me, is dedicated to a goddess. Nilina in my case. Another, usually the sickliest, is dedicated to a demon. The tradition is that will keep the rest of the family free of evil. And if the child survives, she becomes the family scapegoat. So having the “bad baby” be one’s only surviving child must be like a curse.

Customer Service Inbound only call center. Seriously as long as it was not porn, they did not care what we did on the computers between taking calls. Most of us played a lot of Bejeweled.
My hate for you is still less than that for a guy I used to play World of Warcraft with.
He was a paramedic, but they’re not too busy in our mid-sized city (we actually have an issue with there being much fewer jobs for paramedics than we are training people to fill). So most of his 8-hour shift in the ambulance was spent waiting around IN CASE an emergency happened, and very little time actually dealing with one.
So what he did with his excess of spare time was drive the ambulance to the parking lot of a hotel he knew had free wifi, log in with his laptop and play WoW for most of his shift… for which he made $20/h, or about double the minimum wage at the time.
Meanwhile, I was making so little money at the time I was looking at playing on buggy freeservers to save on my $15/m WoW subscription.
The envy… it burned! >_<

I made slightly above minimum wage for California and my job was in constant danger of going away. I don’t think you would have had much in the way of reasons to be envious.
Oh, I’ve done your job too. Didn’t care for it. I’m fairly introverted, but do a lot better talking to people face-to-face, so spending 8 hours talking on the phone was twice as exhausting as it would be to most people. It actually started to make me physically sick.
Shame as I took the call-center job because I wanted the 50% pay raise over actual minimum wage I was making in the coffee shop all the call-center people were getting their caffeine fixes from. 😛
On one level, I’m delighted by the backstory. Even better, Andy got a two-fer with Hand Na-B’Lili’s back story in there, so we know why she’s henchmaid-ing The Evil Countess, even though she seems fairly innocuous in herself.
Perhaps someone could acquaint her (or them) with Professor Will Jackson and Orion New Methodissm. Faith, not dogma.
