Bacon being a known class 1 carcinogen, I’m not surprised family are keeping her from it.
I’m a little more surprised you can even get bacon in Japan. I never saw it for sale when I was there (though admittedly I wasn’t there long). Though they do have pigs and pork, so I suppose it’s possible… just doesn’t strike me as fitting into part of the Japanese preferred diet.
Even in the USA, you couldn’t GIVE bacon away in the fat-phobic, early 80s (“Greasy belly meat? Half as much fat as meat? Gross!”) It wasn’t until the Hardy’s fast food franchise cut a deal with butchers to put it onto burgers that bacon really took off in popularity.
