Genuine repentance — when you’re still alive and not just out of last-minute desperation– counts for a lot.
That is what the last rites are supposed to be all about. Letting you die in a state of grace so that you will enter the Kingdom of God. Personally, if my day to day behavior isn’t enough to get me in the gates I’m not sure I’d feel right squeaking in on a technicality. And I’m already starting plans to take over Hell just in case I land there.
If heaven is full of people who squeaked in on a technicality, I probably wouldn’t want to stay there, would you?
