I can see how you could get “guide” from “quaid.”

Welcome to the Main Bridge, Just Ace.

Ace
Commander Denali? Didn’t you go off duty just a few hours ago?

Denali
That was my watch team’s Break Shift.

A shift, or milli-cycle, is about 7 of your hours. We usually do 2 Duty Shifts, separated by a Break Shift, and a Rest Period of 2 shifts.

Ace
So you work 14 hours in a 35 hour day? Sounds kind of rough.

Denali
Really? We usually get bored and spend time on side projects. There’s actually regs specifying rest and the time we have to spend on it.

Thank The Guide for coffee, though.

Ace
You don’t literally mean The Guide, do you?

Denali
It is said so. “Ka’va, the lifter of spirits,” he called it. Before his time, we have no record of anything like it.

Ace
That was 800 years ago. The earliest documented drinking of coffee was from the 15th century. But legends do put it’s discovery to the 8th or 9th century. And the plant did originate in Africa. But it still seems a stretch for an ancient Egyptian to have it.

Denali
Just one of many mysteries surrounding The Guide.

Ace
Did this “Guide” have a name?

Denali
Not that is recorded. He was simply addressed by an Old Orion word for a guide or leader, which is actually the same as an old Terran word for it, too.

“Quaid.”
