Funny part of this is that men used to carry their valuables in a pouch before pockets, so like many fashions purses started out for men.

I wish I could link a clip from Adam Ruins Everything (a night out), where they debunk the history of pockets and purses, but they’ve only put a couple clips from each show up on Youtube, and that part wasn’t one of them. πŸ™

Originally, pants with pockets were only for the lower classes, to carry their tools or whatever else peasants needed to carry. For a wealthy man to wear pockets suggested he wasn’t rich enough to pay someone to walk behind him carrying his stuff. πŸ˜›

Yes but before pants had pockets a person carried his valuables in a pouch on his belt that was called a purse. Hence the reason we sometimes call a pickpocket a cut purse. They would either cut the bottom of the pouch to drop the money out, or simply cut the strings holding it to the belt. It isn’t only the wealthy who get robbed, in fact because the wealthy were the ones trained to fight and could afford to travel with guards, it was safer to steal from the poor.

What about fanny packs? Aren’t they a type of pouch?

A fanny pack is very similar to what men once carried. Interestingly enough, the pouch was even called a purse. The concept holds over in what we call the prizes for horse races and even boxing matches. You compete for a purse.

This is a work of fiction. Any similarity to persons or cats, living, dead, undead, artificial, spectral, or semi-divine is coincidental. Really! I don’t know anyone like these people!
