This is why I like Partners. It implies nothing about gender, roles, nor even numbers.
I used to use that to refer to my mum’s husband before they finally got married after living together for nearly thirty years, and a work colleague absolutely tore into me, insisting it was an insulting term and I should be referring to him as her husband. Think it was one of the strangest and harshest responses I’ve ever had to anything I’ve said. No idea what she had against the word…
Well, if they hadn’t actually gotten married at that stage, then what else were you supposed to call them?
Mum has a problem with watching “The Chase” (the proper English one, with Bradders Walsh) and the contestants referring to their partner, even those who have been married for a long time with several kids, as though ‘husband’, ‘wife’, or even ‘spouse’ is an offensive term
Well, if anyone tries to tear into me for calling my life partners just that and claims it is an insult, I’ll point out that we have several fairly long discussions on the topic and this was what we mutually decided worked for us. And again, for us, it works. I leave the rest of the world free to pick their own lables.

I was actually responding to blackflame’s comment rather than you, Guesticus. I probable should have included something in my comment to make that more apparent. The downside of being the one to edit your own posts is that what is obvious to you isn’t always clear to the rest of the world. I do the same thing with speaking all the time, you’d think I’d have learned better by now. 🙂
My only problem is that this usage has almost completely overridden the older and more general meaning. I formed a computer consulting partnership with another guy, years ago, and had to be careful to refer to him as my BUSINESS partner lest people assume we were a gay couple.
I have to admit that I have little to no concern these days over what people assume about my relationships. I will concede that given the sharing of our joint finances and the fact that we take each other into consideration on the issues of employment that we have been business partners as well, and now we run all of our income through a company we formed and jointly run. The key factor to our use of the term partners was a very long discussion between my longest partner and myself, and all additions seem to fall into it will little effort beyond a brief explanation of the history.
Ace sure seems to be unintentionally pulling details and terms from his time with the Orions (at age 15) to the front of his memory lately. Earlier he had a Freudian slip about being and absent father to his kids again (was very heavily implied that he donated some sperm samples to X before they parted ways not long after his 16th birthday) and now, “bond-partners” is a term the Orions use.
Is Andy dropping hints that the memory blockers in Ace are fading, or is this more like foreshadowing that another story arc with the Orions is coming up?
Ace did mention that that the memory gaps were spaced such that he was coming due for another episode.
