I used to use that to refer to my mum’s husband before they finally got married after living together for nearly thirty years, and a work colleague absolutely tore into me, insisting it was an insulting term and I should be referring to him as her husband. Mum has a problem with watching “The Chase” (the proper English one, with Bradders Walsh) and the contestants referring to their partner, even those who have been married for a long time with several kids, as though ‘husband’, ‘wife’, or even ‘spouse’ is an offensive term
Well, if anyone tries to tear into me for calling my life partners just that and claims it is an insult, I’ll point out that we have several fairly long discussions on the topic and this was what we mutually decided worked for us. And again, for us, it works. I leave the rest of the world free to pick their own lables.
This is why I like Partners. It implies nothing about gender, roles, nor even numbers.
