A safety feature that locks up and announces the fact that your aiming at a friend is both a wonderful idea and potentially very stupid. Friendly fire is always a hazard in a large battle situation where there is little time to pick and choose your targets, but depending on the volume of the announcement you firearm could easily give away your position to the enemy and get you killed in the time it takes to adjust your aim. Also it would make firearms useless in a mutiny situation as neither side would be able to use them against their opponents.

During the Falclan Island War a British ship was damaged by a missle that their anti-missle system should have been able to take out. The problem was that both sides missles were designed to take an indirect path, so the only way to not shoot down your own missles was the IFF signal (identify friend/ foe). Since both sides were using identical French designed missles, and reseting the IFF violated the warranty, the anti-missle system thought ALL the missles were friendly.

A philosophical difference, from a culture that would prefer to preserve lives, rather than “win”.

They treat crime as a mental health problem and don’t execute anyone. Your example of a ship mutiny is the sort of situation they’d prefer to sort without ANYONE dying on either side. True there’s other ways to kill people than space-blasters, but few so easy to use. Taking them right out of the equation can only serve to reduce the body counts.

This is a work of fiction. Any similarity to persons or cats, living, dead, undead, artificial, spectral, or semi-divine is coincidental. Really! I don’t know anyone like these people!
