Weird Al.

Say what?

na-Nilina
My hair. I’m fan of Weird Al Yankovic.

Magenta
Oh? I never asked ‘cause I was afraid it was some High Born thing. Like how The Countess and her henchmaid, have their hair.

na-Nilina
Realy? Sure I kept my birth name, but I broke with my family and that High Born slash Purist crap when I joined ExCorps. I thought everyone knew that. I must rethink how I do my hair.

And please don’t be so hard on Hand na-B’Lili. She’s not really into the elitist High Born traditions either, but she’s her mother’s only surviving family.

Magenta
Wait. A child given to the demon, Belili, is a sole survivor?

na-Nillina
Yes. Hand na-B’Lili was in a medical center intensive care unit as a baby when Habit Aesop broke up. The rest of their family was lost.

Akane
Given to the demon?

na-Nilina
The “na-” prefix in High Born tradition means that the child’s life is given over. One, like me, is dedicated to a goddess. Nilina in my case. Another, usually the sickliest, is dedicated to a demon. The tradition is that will keep the rest of the family free of evil. And if the child survives, she becomes the family scapegoat. So having the “bad baby” be one’s only surviving child must be like a curse.

Akane
So na-B’Lili tries to be a good daughter?

na-Nilina
And I was supposed to be a temple priestess. Tho, the family temple was lost with that same habit breakup. I’m a real disappointment to my mother for joining ExCorps and not establishing a new temple.

However, I do still officiate bond and wedding ceremonies.
